Sean Pritchard’s 17th-century cottage decorated for Christmas

Sean’s bohemian approach to the decoration of his house is reminiscent of the Bloomsbury group’s homes, as well as gardens like Great Dixter. It’s no coincidence he cites both as sources of inspiration. These are places where things were ‘allowed to sprawl and creep’, moving on their own with a sense of magic. ‘Once we finally bought this cottage I felt a real excitement,’ says Sean. ‘I could try and create some of that magic myself.’

Sean Pritchard on the garden he designed for the Hampton Court Palace Garden Festival

Amongst the plenty of inspiring gardens to visit is one designed by garden designer Sean Pritchard, who has teamed up with Macmillan Cancer Support to design a garden which will “tell the story of how a gift in your will today can help look after people in the future”, says Sean. With almost a third of Macmillan’s support coming from gifts in wills, this theme was essential when it came to approaching the design of the garden, and the idea of “thirds” is noticeable throughout the garden–there are three benches, three levels, and three water features.

Garden and landscape designer Sean A. Pritchard has his first book launching this spring. Outside In will show you how to plan a garden so that every month of the year there’s something beautiful to bring inside. Sean qualified from the Garden Design School in Bristol with a Distinction and has created gardens across the UK with a design practice based out of London and Somerset, as well as winning a Silver medal for his show garden at RHS Hampton Court in 2022.

Mitchell Beazley picks Pritchard’s book on growing and designing a garden

Mitchell Beazley, part of the Octopus Publishing Group, has signed Outside In by gardener and garden designer Sean A Pritchard. Publisher Alison Starling acquired world rights in all languages direct from the author for publication on 11th April 2024.
